The Central Cambridge Ecumenical Network exists for planning, and sharing information about, interdenominational events in the city centre. It is not a membership organisation, but aims to serve the city centre’s worshipping congregations which identify with the Christian message.
If you belong to, or minister to, such a congregation and would like to join the Network mailing list please email its co-ordinator at cc.ecunet@gmail.com
The initial plans of the Network are very modest: to organise three events a year, and run this simple web page. Occasional circular emails will give details of plans as they emerge, and indicate ways in which churches can help the Network’s activity.
Events
We have inherited (from the former Churches Together in Central Cambridge) plans for three annual events:
- a combined service in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity;
- a joint Act of Witness on Market Hill on Good Friday; and
- an act of joint worship for ‘Creationtide’.
Dates and details for 2025 are as follows:
- Week of Prayer for Christian Unity – a joint service at Wesley Methodist Church, Christ’s Pieces, at 3pm on Sunday 19 January. The preacher will be The Very Reverend Professor David Fergusson, Dean of the Chapel Royal in Scotland and Regius Professor of Divinity in the University of Cambridge. Material to be used was prepared for the Week of Prayer by the ecumenical monastic community of brothers and sisters at Bose in Northern Italy.
- Good Friday Act of Witness on Market Hill at 11.30 am on 18 April.
- Creationtide Service at Little St Mary’s Church, Trumpington Street, at 3pm on Sunday 5 October. The preacher will be Brother Samuel SSF, Minister Provincial of the Society of St Francis and formerly Vicar of St Bene’t’s Church Cambridge.
Planning Meetings
There are two in-person planning meetings a year at which necessary arrangements for future services and events can be made. The first Planning Meeting will be at 2.30pm on Wednesday 21 May at St Bene’t’s Church, Bene’t Street. Anybody on the Network mailing list. or some other person from their church, will be welcome to attend the meeting.
Interfaith relations
The mailing list will also draw attention to events and plans of Interfaith Connection Cambridge, which seeks to bring together communities of faith in the city, helping them to learn about one another’s traditions, understand one another better, extend hospitality to one another, and become friends. Ideas on this can be sent to the Network address, and mailing list recipients will be informed whenever there is a particular need for Christian presenters or hosts. The next ICC event, focussed on Hebrew artwork and dance, will take place at Beth Shalom Reform Synagogue at 6pm on Monday 20 January 2025.
Community service
The Network draws attention to other examples of inter-church work serving the wider community in Cambridge, including:
